I will start by saying this; Not only Can Congress hold Lisa Page / Peter Strzok / and the likes and the likes in Contempt, they must start using that Power Immediately. Americans have begun to lose all faith in Congress, and that’s dangerous. That sets forth a path to the dismantling of our very Republic.
This is all coming to a head as we see FBI agents act like they are above the law and above congress. Lisa Page whom was set to appear before a House committee stated that she will not appear despite being subpoenaed. In a statement, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said: “It appears that Lisa Page has something to hide … She has known for months that the House Judiciary Committee has sought her testimony as part of our joint investigation with the Oversight Committee into decisions made by the Justice Department in 2016, and she has no excuse for her failure to appear.” The American people see this as Government workers are above the law and we are the lower class plebs. Does Congress just sit back and let this happen, reinforcing the idea that the Swamp is above the law?
Yes, Congress does have the power to hold Lisa Page / Peter Strzok / and the likes in Contempt. What does contempt of Congress mean you ask? Contempt of Congress is when is the act of obstructing the work of Congress or one of its committees, ie: House intelligence committee. Historically, the bribery of a Senator or Representative was considered contempt of Congress. In current times, contempt of Congress has generally applied to the refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by congress, usually seeking to compel either testimony or the production of requested documents.
“not exposed to every indignity and interruption that rudeness, caprice, or even conspiracy, may mediate against it”
One of the powers given to Congress is the power to Impeach and try federal officers. As stated in Article 1 of the Constitution. This power implies that congress can hold someone in contempt. Furthermore, the Supreme Court held in 1821 that Congress’ power to hold someone in contempt was essential to ensure that Congress was “… not exposed to every indignity and interruption that rudeness, caprice, or even conspiracy, may mediate against it.”
The Supreme Court meant if Congress did not have this power, or use this power, Conspiracy may mediate against it. That’s exactly what we are seeing today. With the Page/Strzok Texts, Rod Rosenstein refusal to turn over unredacted documents to the house intelligence committee, ETC… ETC… As Jim Jordan said it so elegantly “Lisa Page ignores congressional subpoena, once again showing the double standard. One set of rules for regular Americans, a different set for the Swamp! ” By not using this power we are seeing the very things happen that the Supreme court warned us of so many years ago.
